Answers
- 1. Can I study for a primary degree in
Veterinary Medicine at Cambridge as a postgraduate
qualification?
In the British system, the qualification required to practice
Veterinary Clinical Medicine is an undergraduate degree, albeit one
that at Cambridge requires 6 years of study.
Those who have a good first degree (from the UK or abroad) in a
science subject may be exempt from 1 or very exceptionally two
years of this degree, but the number of places for this type of
entry is severely limited. Please direct all enquiries about
admission to study Veterinary Medicine to the Admissions Officer (Telephone: 01223
330811). See also Undergraduate
Admission.

- 2. What qualifications do I need to get a
place to study for a Degree by Research in the Department of Veterinary Medicine?
Cambridge entry is highly competitive. You will need an
excellent first degree (at least 2.1 for UK graduates) either in an
appropriate basic science or in Veterinary or Human Medicine, and
proven drive and enthusiasm. Even then, we can only find places for
a small proportion of applicants.
But we believe we offer excellence in training and facilities to
those who join us.

- 3. Does the Cambridge Veterinary School
offer scholarships to foreign postgraduate students?
Sadly the Department has access only to very
limited scholarship funds for postgraduate research, and those
which we have are dedicated to UK and EU students.
However, we are privileged to host and teach many foreign students
from all parts of the world. Most overseas research students are
supported by Commonwealth Scholarships or awards from their own
Government or the British Council, whilst Cambridge University
(centrally, NOT this Department) has a small number of highly
competitive studentship awards. These include the Gates Cambridge Scholarships
(open to all nationalities except UK citizens), the Cambridge Commonwealth
and Overseas Trusts.
A number of other studentship awards are advertised in the Awards
edition of the University Reporter. If you apply to, and are accepted by
the Department as a postgraduate student, then you
will be expected to provide proof of your ability to fund yourself
before taking up your studentship. In these circumstances (that is,
only after acceptance by this Department) the Department
will write letters of support to bodies to which you apply for
funds.

- 4. Does Cambridge offer postgraduate
degrees allowing clinical specialism within Veterinary
Medicine?
The Department has a programme of internships and residencies to
allow clinical specialism. In general these lead to the
Certificates and Diplomas of the RCVS or to their European
equivalents, and not to Degrees of the University of
Cambridge.
The number of places is very limited, and vacancies are advertised
in the Veterinary Record or on the Department's news and vacancies page . If you wish to work with a
particular clinical consultant who is already known to you, you are
advised to contact them directly.
