CAL resources at Cambridge University Veterinary SchoolThe Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge is a member of the CLIVE consortium (Computer Aided Learning in Veterinary Medicine). A considerable number of computer aided learning (CAL) packages have been integrated into courses at the clinical school and are available for revision of preclinical subjects. Some packages are an integral part of the core teaching in courses such as parasitology and cattle medicine. Other packages provide additional learning support and extension of core material. All these packages provide additional resources for learning designed to supplement conventional teaching methods such as lectures and practicals. All the CAL packages are available within the Dr Lee computer room where a number of PCs are available for student use. As part of a continuing program of development of CAL for use in the veterinary course the newest packages have been produced for viewing on the web, as listed at Veterinary CAL Packages on the Web, and from the workstations. All packages are also available on CDROM which can be obtained from the Computer Officers and used on the computers in the Dr Lee room. A second set of discs (excluding the Cdi discs) are available for loan from the librarian's office for use on home or college machines. Students who have difficulty using these packages should seek help from the Computer Officers (Judy Smither, Sheena Tharakan) or Dr Mark Holmes. A list of all the titles available to students is given in the Complete list of CAL packages available at CUVS. Students should be aware that like the contents of the conventional library not all titles have been recently reviewed by the teaching staff. Those packages of particular use to students will be indicated in the course documentation or during lectures. Other packages may be of use, or of interest to some students. If students have any comments about the content or operation of CAL programs a comment book is available in the computer room. We would also be grateful for any suggestions of areas of the curriculum that students feel might benefit from the inclusion of CAL packages. |
