The Dynamics of Infectious Diseases (Part II undergraduate course)

Educational aims of the course

This course was developed to:

  1. Produce a cohort of scientifically trained graduates with a thorough understanding of infectious disease dynamics from the molecular cellular level to the global population level. This will allow them to contribute in the future towards the national and international need for control of infectious diseases.
  2. Provide a stimulating and challenging learning environment where information at the cutting edge of the subject is delivered whenever possible by experts actively involved in research in that area.
  3. Provide a complementary course with a strong emphasis on disease dynamics that can combine with the existing 2 paper pathology Part II courses in either Virology, Immunology or Microbiology & Parasitology.
  4. Provide laboratory based research training for a limited number of students (<10).
  5. Develop the student's analytical, critical reading and presentation skills.

Choosing Dynamics of Infectious Diseases (DID)

DID is a fifth option (Option E) in Part II Pathology. It is taken in combination with either Option B (Immunology), Option C (MPD) or Option D (Virology). The combined pair of options are offered in a "Single-subject Pathology" format for those wishing to do a research project, or as a "major" subject within the NST Biological and Biomedical Sciences Tripos. The NST Biological and Biomedical Sciences format does not include a research project. Instead, the student must select an additional "minor" course option and produce a dissertation.

Details on how to apply can be found at the Pathology Part II website.

See the Timetable for the academic year 2009/10.
