The main aid to monitoring student progress is the formal supervision, (see section 2 and Log), but more complete assessments occur through the ‘milestones’ such as the literature review, and particularly through the annual assessments, as outlined below.  In compiling this guidance the Graduate Education Committee has deliberately avoided the use of the word “examination” to describe these assessments.  Assessment of student progress is necessary to detect students who are unsuitable to continue, but the assessments should also function as a forum for discussion of the design, direction and progress of the project, and a focus for offering strategic advice and help to the student (and sometimes the supervisor).
