Clinical Neurology Service

What we do

The Clinical Neurology service accepts all types of neurological referrals ranging from brain and spinal cord diseases to neuromuscular disorders. Apart from the more common neurological diseases, such as idiopathic seizures, disc disease and brain tumors, we also diagnose and treat rare neurological syndromes. The hospital is exceptionally well equipped: we have on-site CT and MRI, up-to-date electrophysiological diagnostic equipment and excellent newly built operating rooms. Also, cerebrospinal fluid can be analyzed on-site, as well as muscle and nerve biopsies, leading to an early diagnosis and prompt treatment. Radiotherapy is offered by our oncology service. As one of the teams within the hospital the neurology group is always able to seek advice from specialists in other disciplines, such as internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology and medical imaging

Neurology team

The clinical neurology service is run by An Vanhaesebrouck, a European Specialist in Veterinary Neurology and supported by Edward Ives, a Senior Clinical Scholar in Veterinary Neurology. Paul Freeman is joining us once a week. He is a Certificate holder in Small Animal Orthopedics and is working towards the Veterinary Neurology board exam.

Research interests

At the moment several research projects are running. We are recruiting the following cases:

  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniels with syringohydromyelia
  • young male Labradors with extreme generalized muscular stiffness
  • young Jack Russell Terriers with hereditary ataxia and neuromyotonia
  • dogs with acral dermatitis or lick granuloma

Please, contact us in case you would be interested to know more about any of these projects.

Contact

We are always happy to talk to our colleagues in practice about any neurological case. We aim to see urgent neurological cases the same day. We are also part of the 24-hour emergency service of the Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital. We are best accessed through the hospital reception or by email.
