Research on the Genetics of Anal Sac Gland Carcinoma in English Cocker Spaniels

For a sample submission form (for cases of any age, and for healthy controls 9 years or older) click here.

We aim to identify the genetic factors predisposing to anal gland sac carcinoma in this breed. Our preliminary work has already shown the likelihood of an effect of a common variation in the genome region harbouring immune-related genes. However, to take this further we require additional samples, both of tumour bearing individuals and from healthy veteran controls (English cocker spaniels aged 9 years and above).

The samples of English cocker spaniels affected by this tumour are blood samples, as described below.
On the other hand, for healthy controls either blood samples or buccal swabs may be used.

Blood samples of affected and non-affected dogs:

Cases
If an English cocker spaniel, a springer spaniel or a cavalier King Charles spaniel has presented this carcinoma, it would be of great value to this project if a blood sample and the affected patient's pedigree certificate could be submitted for inclusion in the analyses, along with the sample submission form.

Controls
To identify the genetic factors predisposing to this carcinoma it is necessary to compare the genetic material of affected English cocker spaniels and of old dogs (9 years and above) of the same breed that have not presented this cancer. We are therefore also receiving blood samples and pedigree certificates of these dogs, and the sample submission form..

Sample characteristics
For genotypic analyses, 2ml whole blood in EDTA is requested. If blood is obtained, it should be done in accordance with local rules governing sample collection for scientific procedures. In the UK this means that blood could only be used if venepuncture was already going to be performed for other reasons, for example, routine haematology or serum calcium concentration determination. Blood can be shipped within the EU without legal implications. For transfer of samples from outside the EU, please contact me first.

Buccal swabs of non-affected dogs:

For healthy English cocker spaniels (ideally 9 years or older, although dogs of any age are acceptable), it is also possible to use DNA extracted from buccal swabs. This is a non-invasive procedure performed at home by the dog's owner that requires placing a swab in the dog's cheek pouch to collect cells and saliva. These swabs may be sent by ordinary post.

To request these cheek swabs please contact us at drs20@cam.ac.uk
