A pioneering UK research collaboration exploring the links between the gut, immune system and the brain has officially launched in Southampton.

The network is co-led by Department of Veterinary Medicine researcher and principal investigator, Dr Alexandre Almeida, alongside colleagues from the University of Southampton, King’s College London and the Quadram Institute. The Gut-Immune-Brain Axis (GIBA) Network+ brings together researchers from across disciplines to advance understanding of how these systems interact and how that knowledge can be used to improve physical and mental health throughout life.

Supported by a £4.5 million award from the BBSRC, GIBA will provide funding, training and opportunities for collaboration across the UK. More than 45 organisations attended the launch event, marking the start of new research partnerships and the first of several upcoming initiatives, including training courses and funding calls.

Researchers across Cambridge are encouraged to explore the research, funding and training opportunities available through the Network.
