A supportive mentoring culture is key to academic and professional development at Cambridge. Mentoring is a way for people to share knowledge and learn from each other. Both the mentor and the mentee benefit and can achieve more together than alone. This partnership helps them talk, think, take action, and grow.

  • Build confidence
  • Improve well-being
  • Make new connections
  • Learn new skills and knowledge

Mentoring helps create a more diverse and welcoming environment. It brings people together and encourages positive change.

Academic Mentoring

The Academic mentoring scheme brings together academics in more junior posts who are thinking of applying for promotion, with senior academics who have extensive experience of the University's promotion procedures. The process creates an opportunity to have an experienced academic review their CV and promotion paperwork before it is submitted.

Pilot mentoring scheme for early-mid career academics

A new pilot self-match mentoring scheme for early-mid career permanent academic staff grades 9-10 has launched in Easter Term 2025.

Funded by the Enhancing Research Culture Fund, the scheme will increase access to mentoring for academic staff at a crucial stage in their career progression. The scheme is open to permanent academic staff at grades 9-10 on either a Research & Teaching, or a Teaching & Scholarship contract. The objective of the mentoring scheme is to offer additional support around professional development, leadership skills, career confidence and wellbeing. Mentees will be introduced to potential mentors from outside of their department and immediate area of work, offering them a safe space for additional guidance and support.

Professional Services Mentoring

The Professional Services mentoring program is open to all employees, regardless of role or grade. It runs as a self match scheme, and is the largest professional services mentoring program available at the University.
