The lambing season is in full swing at the University farm, providing our fourth-year veterinary students with an invaluable hands-on learning experience. Just a short cycle ride from the Vet School, the farm offers a rare opportunity for students to take on real responsibility, making critical decisions and managing the ups and downs of lambing season in a working farm environment.

This year, the bitterly cold weather has added an extra challenge, testing students’ resilience as they care for ewes and newborn lambs in tough conditions. Lambing is unpredictable, demanding long hours, quick thinking, and problem-solving, but it’s also an incredibly rewarding experience that many students remember fondly from their Cambridge University experience.

As fourth-year student Kathy puts it:

"Managing the lambing at the University farm has been one of my highlights of the course so far. Looking after the flock and helping the lambs thrive has been so rewarding and reminded me why I'm doing this course. I love being outside with animals - it's so therapeutic and has been a nice change from the classroom! Plus, the lambs are just so cute! The practical aspect really aids understanding of the theoretical side of the course, and being instrumental in providing treatments and injections gives us a little taste of vet life!"

Having direct access to a University-run farm is something that sets Cambridge apart, giving students the chance to develop essential clinical and husbandry skills in a way few other vet schools can offer. It’s just one of the many reasons to #BeACambridgeVet!
