New UK research network launched to explore how gut health impacts the brain and mental wellbeing.
A ground-breaking new research network, the UK Gut-Immunology-Brain Axis Network+, has been launched to uncover how the gut, immune system, and brain communicate - and how this connection could transform treatments for conditions like anxiety, depression, and dementia.
Led by researchers from the Department of Veterinary Medicine, Southampton, the Quadram Institute, and King’s College London, and funded by £4.5 million from BBSRC, this four-year project will investigate how lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep, and stress influence health across the gut-immune-brain axis.
By bringing together experts from multiple disciplines and using cutting-edge AI and big data techniques, the network aims to reveal the biological mechanisms behind mental health, brain ageing, and chronic illnesses like obesity and diabetes, paving the way for new therapies and practical, science-backed lifestyle advice.
