Evaluation of the microenvironment and immune function in histiocytic sarcoma

Supervisor: Dr Barbara Blacklaws

My first experience in the field of Oncology was during the preparation of my dissertation, at the University of Bologna, under the supervision of Professor Bettini in 2013.

I have since been working in first opinion practice in the United Kingdom while studying towards a certificate in Small Animal Medicine.

In April 2017 I started an MPhil with Dr Blacklaws and Dr Dobson as my supervisors. I will be studying the particular aggressiveness of histiocytic sarcoma in certain breeds, such as the Flat-Coated Retriever. I will be investigating the influence of microenvironment and of individual immune response on the biological behaviour of the tumour. I will be doing this by analysing the presence of regulatory T cells in peripheral blood by flow-cytometry. The objective is to identify possible therapeutic markers to improve, the otherwise poor, prognosis of this tumour.
