Department of Veterinary Medicine

Cambridge Veterinary School

Throughout the period of your course you will be expected to participate in various Departmental activities, which not only form an important part of your training but are also an excellent way to feel integrated within the department, meet other students and staff and find out what is going on outside of your immediate area.

Journal Clubs - organised once a month by your Graduate Represenative who will send details of the event to all Graduate students.  Participation is strongly recommended and we expect all students to present a journal club at least once during their time in the Department.

Departmental Seminars - we have a wide range of external and internal speakers presenting weekly on Wednesday afternoons during term time.  Details will be circulated weekly.  Attendance is strongly encouraged - these events represent an opportunity not only to hear about work going on outside your normal field but are also a great way to meet other students and staff from within the department.

Friday Morning Seminars:  Every Friday morning during term time, with two 20 minute talks each week presented by students and both research and clinical staff, with 3 'Grand Rounds' per term (discussion of clinical cases arising in the hospital).   Regular attendance at these is expected and all PhD students are expected to present their own work at least once at a Friday Morning Seminar and this is a key milestone at the end of the first year.  You will be contacted by the Graduate Administrator about this.

Dept Research Day: A bi-annual get together for the whole Department in December and July.  We have external speakers plus 'Blitz' presentations from members of the department (staff and students), as well as a poster session with work being displayed from across the department.  Everyone is expected to attend this event, and students are expected to contribute a poster and/or Blitz talk at least once during the course of their studies - prizes are given for the best presentations.
