Fieldwork, Conference and Travel Funding
Department Conference Fund
A small budget is available to help with travel, accommodation, registration fees and poster printing for students who will be presenting at conferences. We expect to be able to award funds for a limited number of requests in the region of up to £500 per application and no more than one award per person per academic year. Students are expected to have requested funds from outer sources. For any posters printed, we expect these to be presented at the next available research afternoon.
Applications for conference attendance costs are considered by the Postgraduate Education Committee on a termly basis.
Forthcoming deadlines for as follows:
- Lent term: 10th March
- Easter Term: 16th June
Applications for poster printing are considered on a rolling basis.
For both types of funding please submit an application form to Fiona Roby fr288@cam.ac.uk.
Fieldwork Fund
Funds are available for postgraduate students for research trips away from Cambridge and not covered by other sources.
The trips being funded must require residence outside Cambridge, and may include lab visits, fieldwork for research purposes (eg data collection or analysis), or specialist training. The remit of this fund does not include attendance to conferences. Travel and accommodation costs as well as additional non-travel living expenses and reasonable research costs may be requested. Students whose grant includes research training support elements must utilise those funds first. Students are also expected to ask their colleges for financial support where available. Students whose research is part of a larger programme within their lab are urged to explain why their fieldwork requires additional support. Students whose applications are successful can be paid in advance but will have to keep a record of expenditure with receipts that will have to be submitted afterwards (any unaccounted funds will have to be returned). Alternatively they can claim back expenses on return (again receipts will be required for any claimed costs). Travel can also be booked directly via the Department.
Please be aware there are limited funds available to the department and the committee would not expect to approve more than one application per person per year and no single application at more than £2600, and this is subject to availability of funding. Where funds are available the committee may consider applications for more than this amount where they are strongly justified and where the applicant can show that they have sought funds from other sources.
Note: An application for Leave to Work Away must be submitted for the period of fieldwork - see info here:
